Retro Spin Top

This is my design of the tops I spun as a kid. They were wood with nothing more than a shouldered nail used as a tip. My brother and I would spin the tops in a hallway with a checkerboard tile floor. We competed for accuracy of the throw and how long a top spun and stayed in the targeted square.
Modern tops are much more sophisticated now. They sport anything from high quality bearing tips to specialized materials. Designs range from low quality to sport to competition grades.
There are online videos showing the correct way to wind and throw the top.
This top is probably not capable of many tricks; but it's still fun to spin.

The weight and balance of the top, along with string thickness, defines the length of the launch string. After playing with the top for awhile it seems that about 63 inches works for me.

If you are right handed, and when the string releases the tip is pointed left, or away from you, the string is too long, if it is pointed right, or toward you, it is too short.
If you are left handed and when the string releases the tip is pointed right, or toward you, the string is too long, if it is pointed left, or away from you, it is too short.

There are many videos explaining how to wind and throw a spin top. This is one that is the closest to how I wind and throw a top.
A little more advanced and slightly different wind.
