The haegeum is a musical instrument that originated from the hoong-ryu family, which has spread across the vast expanse of the Eurasian continent. During the Goryeo Dynasty, this traditional instrument entered Korea and evolved into a unique sound. The haegeum is played by sliding a horse-gun bow horizontally between two vertical strings, creating a distinctive sound that sets it apart from other instruments. This versatile instrument is used in a wide range of traditional music genres, including Jeongak and folk music, as well as in creative and fusion Gugak performances. In fact, the haegeum has close relatives in China's Erhu, Japan's Goku, and Mongolia's Maolinhor, all of which share similarities with this Korean instrument.
