Warning signs are flashing that the increasingly potent ecstasy and MDMA have been posing the greatest risk to users' mental health for decades. Experts are concerned that as ecstasy becomes stronger, its negative effects on people are getting worse. Philip Murphy, a professor who has studied this drug for nearly 20 years, is worried about what's currently being sold in the market. "The danger is much greater than it was back in the late 1990s," he says. "Young people who use stronger ecstasy are at a higher risk of emotional instability and impaired ability to think clearly." In the UK, the number of people admitted to hospitals for mental health and behavioral problems after taking MDMA has increased significantly over the past decade. The admission rate has risen by 215% since 2005/6, when 1,514 people were admitted, compared to 4,770 in 2014/15. A similar trend is observed in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but Wales saw a slight decrease last year. Fiona Measham, an ACMD member and founder of Loop, which tests substances found at festivals and nightclubs, also notes that many Britons seem to be ignoring the risks associated with Class A drugs. "Prices are low and purity is high, so people are continuing to use them because they get more benefits than costs," she says. "Unfortunately, tragic cases of people going to hospital or even dying from taking MDMA exist. However, it's not possible to keep most users who take drugs away."
