The Bongsandong Dangganjiju, located in the town of Bongsan-dong, Wonju city, Gangwon-do, is a Korean relic from the Goryeo period. On June 17, 1976, it was designated as No. 49 cultural asset of Gangwon province. The Dangganjiju is installed at the entrance to a temple and when rituals or ceremonies are performed within the temple, a flag called a "dang" is raised on a pole called a "Danggan". The two stone pillars that hold up the Danggan are called Dangganjiju. This Dangganjiju was originally located in the interior of a temple built during the Unified Silla period. The base of the pillar is buried underground so its shape cannot be discerned, but the two side pillars and the middle pillar support can still be seen. The stone pillar supports are carved out at both ends to fit around the base of the pillars and on top there is a circular ring with a hole in it to hold up the flagpole. The two pillars are rectangular in shape but narrow as they rise, ending in a pointed tip. Careful attention was paid to each part to give a smooth appearance by rounding off sharp edges. It is generally believed that this relic dates back to the Goryeo period when there were no intricate carvings. During the time of Japanese annexation in 1910, one side of the pillar was damaged and restored in April 1980.
