Amphetamine was known in Japan as Hiropen, later renamed to each other as an amphetamine after becoming a drug. In Germany, Temmler produced Pervitin, the product name for soldiers, and "Panzer Chocolate," "Stuka Tablets," and "Hermann Göring Pills" were widely used as stimulants. France's Erwin Rommel-led Seventh Panzer Division, which led the invasion of France, had a supply of 300,000 Pervitin tablets, managed by the division's quartermaster, who gave them to soldiers for 72 hours without sleep. In the Pacific Theater, Japan was said to give kamikaze pilots a shot before takeoff, but it was actually a standard practice in both the Allied and Axis powers. The Allies used Benzedrine, a brand name for amphetamine, extensively between US and British forces, given to fighter pilots for long flights and combat missions and to infantrymen to forget fear before battles. It was also included in survival kits as a means of boosting will to survive. Soviet soldiers used it because they had vodka, but this is an anecdote. They thought methamphetamine was safer than vodka and more effective, so they didn't worry about addiction or other risks. The amount was small (0.03g), so they thought it wasn't harmful. In fact, it was recommended for use by soldiers to forget fatigue and fear. It was even given to night watchmen on naval ships and factory workers working overtime outside the military. In civilian life, it was sold as a stimulant, with advertisements in newspapers. Of course, there were significant addiction problems after the war, and the drug spread widely among the general public due to social circumstances at the time. This is because amphetamine was sold without any restrictions until 1951, when it was finally banned in Japan. In Germany, however, it was used commercially for a longer period than in Japan. The Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic both kept Pervitin as an emergency medication until the 1970s and used it primarily for paratroopers' training to prevent fear of heights. However, the West German government eventually recognized that addiction and after-effects were much worse than expected and classified it as a banned substance. The East German government produced Pervitin for the National People's Army at the Kölnische Chemische Fabrik until 1975 and continued to supply it to air force pilots as an emergency medication until 1988. Even outside of military contexts, athletes used it like a doping agent because anti-doping regulations were not yet in place. The German national team used it before their World Cup final against Hungary in 1954, which was later described as a "miracle" attributed to the drug rather than skill. Even Konrad Adenauer, West Germany's first chancellor, is believed to have used Pervitin until the mid-1960s, according to his son Paul's diary entries, which were released in February 2017. So was the Miracle on the Rhine also a miracle of the drug?
