Born of this substance is like ice or glass fragments. That's why it's called 'bump', 'liquor', 'ice', 'frozen poison' in Korea. In English-speaking countries, too, it is often referred to by slang words derived from its appearance, such as "ice", "glass", "tick," and "crystal." The Korean name for this substance, philopon, is derived from the Japanese company Dai-Nippon Seiyaku's product, Hiropon. Initially, it was called 'Hiropon,' but in recent years, people have mainly referred to it as "philopon" due to its English origin and pronunciation. The name "philopon" has a strong Japanese flavor, which is why English notation is used. The substance has been known to cause users to become dependent after taking it for several months to a year or more. Users may experience withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, and anxiety. Medical professionals have noted that the effects of philopon can be reversed in some individuals, but not all. In 1888, Japanese professor Nagai Nagayoshi discovered this substance while researching cold medicines. He accidentally created a strong stimulant when experimenting with various chemicals to create a decongestant for asthma patients. The new substance showed promise as a treatment for chronic bronchitis and asthma, but its stimulating effects led researchers to study its potential use as an anesthetic. Japanese company Dai-Nippon Seiyaku developed the product under the name "Hiropon," which means "exhaustion reliever." However, it's worth noting that Hiropon didn't actually relieve fatigue; instead, it caused users to feel energized. In Korea, the substance became known as "philopon" or "bump." In Japan, the product was officially registered with the patent number 364236-1. In 1951, the Stimulant Control Act prohibited the manufacture, sale, and use of stimulants for non-medical purposes. During its time on the market, Hiropon came in two forms: a liquid injectable solution and tablets. The injectable form was priced at around 81 yen per 10 doses in 1949, while the tablet form cost between 21 and 43 yen per package of 20-50 tablets. Despite its popularity as a stimulant, philopon has been linked to various health problems, including addiction and increased heart rate. In the film "The Wizard of Oz," actress Judy Garland was given philopon by her studio during filming. The reason for this was that Garland had gained weight due to overeating and smoking. To lose weight quickly, the studio gave her a dose of philopon to suppress her appetite. However, the stimulant effects of philopon made it difficult for Garland to sleep. During World War II, both the Axis and Allied powers used philopon widely without regulation.
