Kashiwabara Shozo, born in the Anki district of Arita village in March 1835. His father was Kashiwabara Taikiji, a doctor who had practiced medicine for thirty years. To pursue his studies in medicine, he traveled to Osaka and studied under Okubo Yozou (Kencho). He then went to Nagasaki in 1861 and trained with Niimi Igyo and the Dutch physician Baldwin. Returning home, he established his own practice.
