Six sturdy Western columns stood solemnly in front of the Macau Library, their base unadorned and their capitals tightly bound and compressed, resembling a row of stern sentries. Above them, a mountain-shaped roof with a naval cap shape supported the building's facade, blending in with some hybrid classical style buildings in Macau. In 1910, pirates kidnapped Catholic students, prompting the Portuguese military to shell Macau and annex several villages. On October 5 that year, Portugal experienced its own revolution, followed by China's Xinhai Revolution the next year, which led to a redefinition of borders and uncertainty about their future. Amidst these turbulent years, the local authorities chose to establish a public school on the site adjacent to the monument commemorating the shelling incident - the precursor to the Macau Library - exposing its dual nature of protecting children and nurturing colonialism. A cultural symbol with a political agenda, this has been a theme since ancient times, adding a sense of nostalgia to Coloane's history.
