Yong-bell with Coiled Chi-dragon Patterns: A Key Component of the Bianzhong Bell Set from Tomb 60, Liulige, Hui County, Henan Province. Discovered in Tomb 60, Liulige, Hui County, Henan Province, this yong-bell is part of a stunning 8-piece bianzhong chime-bells set. A new musical instrument emerged during the early Western Zhou period: the yong-bell, which gradually replaced nao-cymbals. During the Western Zhou era, a traditional yong-bell set consisted of three bells, but by the mid-Spring and Autumn period, this number increased to eight sequential bells. Later, the number of yong-bells expanded even further, becoming non-standardized in the process. Each bell was capable of producing distinct pitches within the music scale, and striking the center or side of the bell could result in two distinct pitches being produced.
