This majestic cauldron was unearthed from Tomb 60 in Liulige, Hui County, Henan Province as one integral part of an exquisite lieding cauldron ensemble. Originally crafted for culinary purposes, it later evolved into a ceremonial vessel symbolizing authority and power. Lieding refers to a collection of dings cauldrons that share identical decorations but vary in size. This specific lieding set comprises nine pieces, defying the traditional norms of the Lieding system which strictly prohibited kings from using such large sets, yet this audacious act was not uncommon among nobles during the Eastern Zhou period. This magnificent ding lacks a lid and boasts a hemispherical body with an expansive flat rim; two elegantly curved loop handles adorn the rim, intricately designed with stylized chi-dragon patterns on a leiwen spiral background. The rounded belly is adorned with two exquisite decorative bands resting on three sturdy cabriole legs, above which lies a flange-like arrangement of interlocking dragons. Crafted using the piece-mold technique, this vessel showcases exceptional craftsmanship and artistic expression.
