This zhong-bell was unearthed at Shanbiao Town Tomb M1, Weihui City, Henan Province, and is part of an eight-piece bianzhong bells ensemble. This musical instrument has been classified as a National Treasure, holding significant importance in understanding the Zhou system of rituals and music associated with burials. Bianzhong bells are smaller versions of the bo-bells; they were often paired with drums to create rich harmonies. Bianzhong bells emerged in the north during the late Shang dynasty and initially consisted of individual pieces. Later, from Western Zhou to the early Spring and Autumn period, bianzhong bells became an integral part of the Zhou system of music as a five-piece set.
