Nara City Kōhata-cho. Granite (Nara stone) made. Lying on the side of the Kasuga-yama Taki-zaka path is a stone Buddha called "Sleeping Buddha." It's said to have fallen from one of the Four Buddhas of Excellent Work, which were carved next to it. The statue is 48 cm high and depicts Vairocana with the Wisdom-Heaven seal. From its style, it seems to be from the Southern and Northern Dynasties period. On the left side are the letters "Ca Ka Ra Ba A" followed by one row of the Indian letters used on the Five-Ring Tower east face, which is a marker for spiritual beginnings.
