The Japan Special Effects Archive Project is a collaborative effort between the nonprofit organization Anime Special Effects Archive (ATAC) and Mori Building Corporation, which operates as its secretariat. The project has been supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Media Arts Archive Promotion Assistance Program. So far, they have worked on repairing miniatures from special effects films that have appeared in various projects and creating a list of their collection at the Sugasawa Special Effects Archives Center. Now, they are trying out digital archiving by scanning three-dimensional objects such as creature suits with 3D scanners. The rubber suits that were used for filming are prone to aging and deteriorating over time, making it difficult to preserve them permanently. Old ones have been broken down due to hydrolysis, losing their original shape. Since degradation is unavoidable, they thought about how they could keep these digital data forever. As a case study for the latex objects, they scanned the head of Vanilla, the monster that appeared in episode 19 ("The Devil Returns") of "Ultra Q" (1966-67), which was only shown once on TV. This valuable item is the only one left in existence. Here, they are releasing a digital 3D model of Vanilla's head, created using photogrammetry.
