Traditional dance performances in Okinawa, Japan, are led by local youth groups who march through their neighborhoods on old festivals' nights. These performances can be classified into several forms and most modern groups center around large drums, smaller drums, and a rhythmic atmosphere. The central part of the prefecture is known for having the highest concentration of these events. In particular, towns like Urasoe City and Nago City are well-known for their drum-based Eisa performances called "Purnanku". This type of performance stands out from others due to its unique rhythm and instrumentation. On the other hand, there are some groups that perform solely with dance without using drums. These types of performances can be found in northern parts of the main island and it's said they may be the oldest form of Eisa. In recent years, various new forms have emerged such as "Creative Drums", which incorporates elements from modern music like pop.
