The Japan Special Effects Archive is a project promoted by the ATAC, a non-profit organization, and Mori Building Corporation (secretariat). This project has been supported by the Media Arts Archives Promotion Assistance Project of the Agency for Cultural Affairs. So far, we have carried out repair work on miniature models used in special effects films and created a list of exhibits at the Sugasawa Special Effects Archive Center. As a new challenge, we are attempting to scan three-dimensional objects such as monster suits using 3D scanning technology and digitize them. Monster suits made of latex (rubber) deteriorate over time, making it difficult to preserve them permanently. The old ones have undergone hydrolysis, causing the original shape to collapse. Since deterioration cannot be avoided, we thought about preserving digital data forever and challenged 3D scanning. As a case study for latex-made objects, we scanned the head of Aboras, a monster that appeared in "The Devil Appears Again" (Episode 19) of Ultra Q (1966-67). This is a valuable real object that exists only once in this world. Here, we are releasing the 3D model of Aboras digitized by photogrammetry.
