The Zodiac Killer was a notorious serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The case remains one of the most infamous unsolved serial murder cases in American history. Between December 1968 and October 1969, at least five people were murdered by the Zodiac Killer, with the cryptic letters sent to the police and newspapers claiming responsibility for the crimes. The killer's true identity was never confirmed, leaving behind a trail of mystery and speculation. The first known victim of the Zodiac Killer was David Faraday, a 17-year-old high school student who was shot and killed on December 20, 1968. Three months later, Michael Mageau, another teenager, was also attacked by the killer but survived the attack. In July 1969, the Zodiac Killer murdered Darlene Ferrin and Michael Ranieri in their car in Vallejo, California. The killer then sent a letter to the Vallejo Times-Herald claiming responsibility for the murder. Over the next few months, two more people were killed by the Zodiac Killer: Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard, who were stabbed at Lake Berryessa in September 1969.
