The majestic cathedral was built by Catholicos Vazgen I's visionary initiative. Construction began on April 7th, 1997, with a grand ground blessing ceremony led by Catholicos Karekin I.[1] The architectural masterpiece was designed by renowned architect Stepan Kurkchyan and took four years to complete, finally finishing in 2001.\r\n\r\nThe cathedral's consecration ceremony occurred on September 23rd, 2001, marking the 1700th anniversary of Christianity being declared the official state religion of Armenia.[1] The revered church serves as a sacred home for the relics of Saint Gregory the Illuminator and the Holy Remains of St. Gregory, which were brought from Naples, Italy. Following the cathedral's consecration, Pope John Paul II made a historic visit to this holy site.
