Regular cavalry in 1812 was divided into heavy (dragon and cuirassier regiments) and light (hussar and lancer regiments). Heavy cavalry was designed for action in close formation against enemy cavalry and infantry. In the Battle of Borodino, the Leib-Cuirassier of His Majesty's Regiment repelled attacks by heavy enemy cavalry in the area of Semenovskoe village. Their actions are depicted on the panorama by F.A. Rubo.
