Each branch of the military had its own structure and organization. Infantry was divided into heavy and light units. Heavy infantry included regular infantry regiments as well as grenadier regiments. Light infantry consisted of jäger regiments. In German, the term "jäger" translates to "hunter, marksman." Jägers were trained in precision shooting and tactics in a skirmish line formation. During the Battle of Borodino, several jäger regiments took up forward positions, defending approaches to the main battle order. They initially faced off against Napoleon's Grande Armée. The 20th jäger regiment wore dark green uniforms with yellow braid and had red number insignia on their sleeves. Their ammunition was black in color. In the Battle of Borodino, the 20th Jäger Regiment fought on the left wing of the United Forces in the Utitz forest.
