The Human Genome Project is a research project that has been underway since 1990 to identify all of the genes present in human DNA. The project was started by James Watson and Francis Crick who were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work on the structure of DNA in 1962. By the year 2003, scientists had mapped more than 30,000 human genes which is roughly half of all known genes. Scientists have been able to identify several thousand genes that are linked to various diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes and cancer. In addition, researchers have discovered over a hundred genetic disorders caused by single-gene mutations, including sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, and Huntington's disease.
