This is easily explained: progress relies on the desire to simplify, but progress also cannot be achieved without looking back at the past. We often hear that graffiti are fleeting, so we've forgotten that some last for centuries. The idea of carving into stone addresses the main challenges of this genre - being everywhere and lasting a long time. It wipes away all the merits of modernity and sends us back to where it all started.
