Heavy Trade Scale, Weight 1 Pood, 18th-19th Century, Russian Empire. The octagonal scales were used in the Russian Empire throughout the 18th century until a decree by Paul I in 1797 introduced a new spherical form of scale for trade. The octagonal scales continued to be manufactured until the mid-19th century. The item was discovered during an expedition to Posen, Germany by museum staff in the village of Gajberg, Ushachsky District, Belarus in 2017. The doors of the house were supported by the scales. The homeowner reported that her grandmother and she herself used the scale as a press for fermenting cabbage. Today someone has repainted the scale "for beauty".
