In 1904, a building appeared at the corner of Vasil Levski Boulevard and Dondoukov Boulevard that stood out from all others. Architect Kiro Marichkov was behind this striking structure, which was the first in the Secession style to be built in Sofia. Dr. Funk, an Austrian obstetrician-gynecologist, commissioned a 25-year-old architect to design and build a private obstetrics and gynecology clinic. Dr. Funk chose to locate his clinic at the edge of town where the air is cleaner. Soon after, Dr. Funk was forced to return to Austria and sold the house to merchant Spas Tychchev, who in turn rented it out to banker Atanas Burrov. After Spas Tychchev's death, his son Alexander lost the house in a game of chance and it was purchased by Dr. Boris Trichkov for 2 million leva in 1927. The house was nationalized after 1944, housing the Bulgarian Red Cross. Following 1989, the house was returned to Dr. Trichkov's daughters. Today, it serves as a central office for insurance agency "Allianz."
