When steel is melted into liquid metal, unwanted gases dissolve in it, and their presence is undesirable because it can cause a significant number of different defects to appear. To remove these unwanted gases, vacuum degassing is usually performed. It takes place after the steel melt is unloaded from the furnace, before it is poured into ingots or loaded into a continuous casting machine.
