Šarengrad Fort

This 15th century fort was constructed by Ban Ivan Morović. The fort boasts an irregular layout, featuring a substantial square bell tower measuring 10x10 meters. Remnants of plaster and large-style windows, unseen in surrounding fortifications, confirm that it served as more than just a soldier's fort - evidence also points to its use as a Franciscan monastery. Alongside the fort and the monastery, a settlement took shape, first documented in 1481 (as Voćin). It wasn't until the fort was abandoned in 1736 that the name Šarengrad emerged. Fort Šarengrad was encircled by a wide ditch, with all walls constructed from solid brick. The northern sections of the defense wall had vanished long ago, replaced by a low four-sided entrance on the southern side, where several preserved walls stood, and a broad door led into the main tower, which featured a barrel vault on the ground floor and a Gothic vault on the second floor. The fate of what once occupied the spacious yard remains unclear today.
