Epee\nNantes, Isle of Bièce\n9th-10th century - Copper alloy, iron alloy, silver, copper\nTYPE PETERSEN H\nMuseum Dobrée, Grand Heritage of Loire-Atlantique - Inv. 928.2.1\nNorman swords are found throughout Europe. Most were likely forged on French territory, where the mineral quality was superior to Scandinavia and artisans were renowned. Other swords must have been hybrids: French blades were paired with Scandinavian-style decorated hilts using techniques and motifs. This beautiful example was discovered during dredging of the Isle of Bièce in Nantes: the geometric hilt decoration damascened with silver and copper is typical of Nordic metalwork.\nSword presented as part of the exhibition Namsborg, Vikings to Nantes, at Chronographe (Rezé, France) in 2018.\nArc'Antique - Grand Heritage of Loire Atlantique
