Épée inscrite Inscription: INGELRD on one side, III on the other Saffré (Loire-Atlantique), Isac river 10th century - Iron alloy TYPE PETERSEN X Musée Dobrée, Grand Patrimoine de Loire-Atlantique - Inv. 873.6.1 Norman swords are found throughout Europe. Most were likely forged on French territory, where the ore was of better quality than in Scandinavia and the artisans were renowned. This is the most commonly proposed hypothesis for blades bearing French inscriptions such as ULFBERHT or INGELR/INGERLD, related to workshop names from Rhine region ateliers. Other swords must have been hybrids: French blades paired with Scandinavian-style decorated hilts. Presented in the exhibition Namsborg, Vikings to Nantes, at the Chronographe (Rezé, France) in 2018. Arc'Antique - Grand Patrimoine de Loire Atlantique
