St. James Church was founded in 1251 by Maurice, a former high bailiff of the Norbertine provostry, as an homage to St. James. The monastery had been home to Norbertine nuns from 1526 to 1577. Following the Turkish occupation at the end of the 17th century, Poor Clares took over the monastery in Trnava, who then rebuilt the church in Baroque style, leaving the towers and the facade unchanged. In 1750, a parish church was established using this structure after the Order was dissolved.
