Áron Márton was a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Transylvania during World War II and Romania's communist dictatorship. He stood out as one of the first intellectuals to openly oppose preparations for World War II, beginning his resistance efforts in 1938. Márton remained in southern Transylvania, which stayed part of Romania after the Second Vienna Award. In a speech given at St. Michael's Church during a visit to Kolozsvár (also known as Cluj) in May 1944, he denounced the planned deportation of Romanian and Hungarian Jews. Just days later, Márton wrote letters to the Hungarian Government, Police, and other authorities, requesting they prohibit the deportation. As a response, he was expelled from the city. For his actions during this time, Márton posthumously received the title "Righteous Among the Nations" from Yad Vashem in Israel (in 1999).
