The exterior appearance of San Martin's Church in Frómista is a defining feature of the Romanesque period during which it was built. Above its low-ceilinged naves stand out an octagonal ciborium over the crossing and two cylindrical towers on either side of the main facade. The three naves, with barrel vaults, the central nave wider and higher than the side naves, end in three circular apses. From the outside, its solid walls are visible, with few windows featuring semicircular arches in the apses and lateral temple facades. On the facades, as a cornice, an ornate chessboard pattern of stone extends to varying heights. Furthermore, beneath the eaves of doors and rooftops there are over 300 small canecillos, with figurines similar to gargoyles representing animals, human beings and mythological or fantastical beings. Above the main entrance is a six-armed crismón of uncertain age.
