Two-Handled Axe (Beil) This Swedish model was developed in the 7th century. The early axe came from Western and Central Europe to Scandinavia, where it evolved into two main models: a two-handed and a four-handled version. The two-handled axe is characterized by two handles on the underside of the blade. The axe was often large and heavy, with a short handle and a long curved edge. The two-handled axe played a key role in woodworking, particularly in smoothing planks. This type of axe held significant importance in shipbuilding and constructing so-called block houses made from horizontal planks. A replica is handmade after an original 11th-century model found on Gotland, specifically in Gothem. The original can be seen at the Historical Museum in Stockholm. Straight handle: length 75 cm Blade length: 15 cm Weight including handle: approximately 1.6 kg
