In ancient times, when all beings belonged to one family, Póshaiank'ia, the father of our sacred bands, lived with his children in the City of Mists, the central place of the Medicine societies worldwide. At the heart of each region's great sea stood a very ancient sacred place, Téthläshinakwïn, a towering mountain peak. To the North was the Mountain Yellow, to the West the Mountain Blue, to the South the Mountain Red, to the East the Mountain White, above the Mountain All-color, and below the Mountain Black. Then Póshaiank'ia spoke to the Mountain Lion, saying, "Long Tail, your heart is strong and will unyielding. Therefore, I give you and your children forever the dominion of the gods of prey and the guardianship of the great Northern World, for your coat is yellow, which means you shall guard from that quarter the coming of evil upon my children of men.
