At the center of each region's great sea stood an extremely old sacred site, Téthläshinakwïn, a massive mountain peak. In the North was Mountain Yellow, in the West was Mountain Blue, in the South was Mountain Red, and in the East was Mountain White. Above them all rose Mountain All-color, while below lay Mountain Black. Then Póshaiank'ia told the Bear, "Black Bear, you possess a strong heart and unyielding will. For this reason, I make you the guardian and master of the West, since your coat is the color of night's land." The Bear was tasked with guarding against evil coming from that quarter on Póshaiank'ia's children, receiving their messages to him, becoming a father in the West for all sacred medicine orders, and creating paths for men's lives.
