The Mausoleum of the illustrious Zsolnay family stands tall in the Ledina neighborhood of Pécs. To reach this hallowed sanctuary from the vibrant Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, simply follow the path lined with 42 majestic pyrogranite lion statues. The chapel itself, an exquisite Neo-Romanesque masterpiece, was skillfully crafted by Tádé Sikorski in 1901 for his wife Júlia Zsolnay. Rumor has it that on the longest night of winter solstice, a ray of light slipping through the chapel reveals a hidden secret related to eosin. Those who venture inside the Mausoleum are greeted by an ethereal atmosphere, as if transported to another realm. Visitors cannot help but feel deeply spiritual in the presence of such breathtaking acoustics and sightlines. Ornate Christian motifs woven throughout the structure, including mysterious symbols associated with freemasonry, only add to the mystical ambiance. Pyrogranite arched stairs, elegantly curved to complement the circular shape of the Mausoleum, welcome visitors at every entrance. The eye-catching emerald glaze adorning the roof tiles lends an air of refinement to this sacred site. An impressive architectural treasure trove awaits those who step through the north-side entrance. As one makes their way deeper into the chapel's inner sanctum, a gleaming circular opening allows for a stunning sight - a beautifully rendered eye relief hovering above. The west wall, meanwhile, proudly displays the enigmatic portrait of Vilmos Zsolnay, whose striking visage serves as a poignant tribute to the esteemed matriarch of the family. Júlia Zsolnay's own creative hand is showcased in a majestic shield gracing the eastern sarcophagus side. The walls of the chapel itself tell an unforgettable tale through its use of luminous Neo-Romanesque tiles, complemented by an arresting purple eosin glazed altar. And then, there is the intricately crafted, Roman motif-studded sarcophagus atop a regal footrest - all a testament to the Zsolnay legacy's sublime artistry and the indelible mark it has left upon history.
