Zsolnay Fountain - Pecs, Hungary

On the south side of Pécs' main square, Széchenyi Square, stands a four-metre-tall pyrogranite well called Zsolnay Well. Replacing the former "Drip of Khadi" that operated until 1893 during Turkish times, the Zsolnay Well has its origins in an offer made by Miklós Zsolnay in 1908 to donate a fountain to Pécs in memory of his late father Vilmos Zsolnay. Art Nouveau design came from Andor Pilch in 1909 and took shape with greyish-glazed pyrogranite art completed by 1912 but was erected in its current spot just ten years later, in 1930. Unique features are found within ox head drips covered with eosin glaze meant to imitate ancient gold drinking cups featuring animal heads discovered in Nagyszentmiklós' treasures. The well's four leaky ox heads offer constantly refreshing, drinkable water (with an exception made during the winter months when protective measures secure the monument). A pair of city coat of arms hangs above and below, accompanied by a Zsolnay Factory emblem displaying five towers to the east and west of the well. In top-view perspective, the Zsolnay Well takes on a shape reminiscent of clover, while its epigraph remains in tune with Vilmos Zsolnay's spirit: "Vilmos Zsolnay Memorial Well" that serves as eternal witness to Pécs' growth, prosperity of citizens."
