thingiverse
The existence of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, spanning five hectares, owes its birth to the 2010 European Capital of Culture project in Pécs. Launched in 2009 within the old run-down Zsolnay Factory's perimeter, the massive investment revitalized the once neglected territory. Moving the still-operating production facility to the eastern complex side allowed for renovating or reconstructing the abandoned buildings while demolishing those beyond repair. Additionally, a stunning makeover was given to the factory park boasting beautiful monument statues and vases. The completed Cultural Quarter opened its doors in December 2011. Comprising four interconnected districts, including Handicrafts District, Creative District, Children and Family District, and University District, the area is situated east of Pécs's inner city. Visiting the Handicrafts District allows patrons to uncover Zsolnay family history through exhibitions and showcases at the Sikorski Villa featuring Gyugyi collection items from its golden age. In the same district resides Pink Zsolnay Exhibition presenting the beauty of Barnabás Winkler's ceramic works and their associated everyday tools displayed with stunning pink color. Moreover, one finds there the renewed Mausoleum, Artists’ House, Incubator, and lively Handicrafts Street with the numerous handicraftsmen shops. The heart of Creative District was previously home to a pyrogranite factory; it is now taken by Youth House operated under Pécs Youth Centre management. Here, stands central Pyrogranite Square adorned with vibrant chimneys rising towards the sky, attracting many through its concert and events' schedule. For three years after its unveiling, in wintertime an outdoor ice skating rink installed here brings vitality to this lively gathering point. Always ready for welcoming guests are the eating establishments located within Creative District – providing not only various foods but rich assortment of coffee and drinks options as well. Enjoyable time spent there awaits young ones along with adults by experiencing engaging interactive shows at scientific, technical exhibition; Planetarium visitations and admiring artworks exhibited at Pécs Gallery; Bóbia Puppet Theatre's artistic performance that occupies the Mattyasovszky House and Puppet Museum are a perfect destination to keep busy. Spaces located between buildings host different kind of play facilities including sport grounds and stage venues too. Lastly situated within the vicinity of this Zsolnay Quarter stands a Conference and Concert Centre, known as Kodály Center that took place after massive constructions finalized at end 2010 – a new hub integrating conferences, Pécs Cultural centre book shop alongside cafes within its 13,000 square metre framework.
