To improve the Z-Rod coupler on a Prusa Mendel, I altered an existing "608 Ball Chain Idler with matching Pulley Hack" design. Firstly, I removed the pulley portion and adjusted the shaft diameter to 8mm for compatibility with the z-rod. Then, I combined these modified parts in Rhino using the 'flip and bond' technique. Although it was a makeshift solution, it printed successfully and should work well. To assemble, you'll need 12 each of M3 nuts and M3 x 8mm grub screws. Drill out the stepper end with 9, 10, or 11 numbered drill bits for a tight fit. Alternatively, you could tap the 8mm z-rod end or drill it to 5/16 inch. As a cost-saving tip, numbered drill bits and M3 grub screws are more affordable at local hardware stores than online.
