Zoomorph P, nicknamed The Great Turtle by explorer Maudslay, is a masterpiece of Mesoamerican art dedicated in 795 by "Sky Xul". Weighing around 20 tons, it dominates the landscape with its sheer scale and grandeur. On one side, a larger-than-life portrait of "Sky Xul" himself is seated cross-legged within the open jaws of an enormous crocodile-mountain hybrid monster, exuding power and majesty. The design of this zoomorph is incredibly intricate, with every detail carefully crafted to create a sense of awe-inspiring wonder. The whole monument is covered in skilfully executed sculpture that seems to come alive under the gaze of the viewer. Located in the Ballcourt Plaza, just south of the ballcourt, Zoomorph P stands as a testament to the artistic and architectural prowess of its creators. Accompanying this magnificent structure is an altar depicting an unidentified deity leaping from a split in the earth, adding to the sense of mystery and enchantment that surrounds this ancient wonder. A hieroglyphic text on the zoomorph reveals the founding of Quiriguá under the supervision of the king of Copán, while traces of red pigment discovered on the monument suggest that it was originally painted in vibrant hues, further underscoring its importance as a masterpiece of Mesoamerican art and culture.
