Zoa Puck Mold
thingiverse
I decided I wanted to grow my different types of Zoas in a way that was easy to move around or even change tanks as I've had plenty of fish have the taste for them in the past. I used Crisco to line the mold parts and even hold them together while using a 50/50 mix of sand and tile grout as my material. Needs to cure for 2 full days before removing as my first attempt simply cracked into pieces. (also, didn't use anything for a mold release) Center plug is large enough to drop in a 3/4" frag plug. Chose that size as I have more zoas on my frag rack that came mounted to smaller plugs plus it fits the curvature of the dome better. The casting is just shy of 3" long and a bit over 2" wide I was also able to simply fill my small alignment hole with crisco on one mold to make a solid puck to glue on frags. I have no clue if crisco is reef safe but I figured its at least a food grade substance and the pucks could be cured just like rock if someone wanted to be extreme. My LFS had no clue about it but suggest the manufacturers of frag plugs might use something as a mold release so if anyone has a good suggestion, I'm listening... lol Meant for Zoas, but would possibly be cool for lots of encrusting corals like lepto, cyphastrea, etc... I would even imagine an Acro could grow out on it to a decent size and still be moveable without issue though not really sure anyone would have a reason for that.
