Human: This iconic sculpture represents Hans Joachim von Zieten, famously known as Johann Joachim von Ziethen, who rose through the ranks to become a renowned cavalry general in the Prussian army during the 18th century. Beginning his illustrious military career in an infantry regiment, he repeatedly sought promotion over ten years of service, even petitioning the king personally on one occasion. However, due to his short stature, the king consistently overlooked him for advancement, opting instead to favor tall men. On his final request, the king dismissed Zieten outright, scrawling a note in the margin of his petition. Two years later, undeterred, Zieten enlisted as a lieutenant but soon found himself in trouble with his squadron commander after engaging in an argument that escalated into a duel. As punishment, he was sentenced to a year's imprisonment at Konigsberg fortress. Upon his release, Zieten promptly challenged his commander to another duel, resulting in his dismissal once more. Zieten eventually managed to secure reinstatement in the newly formed Hussar regiment, where he demonstrated exceptional talent as a cavalryman and gained valuable expertise from his mentor, General Baronay of the Austrian army, who had mastered light cavalry work during this period. Rising through the ranks, Zieten was eventually promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the hussar regiment. His unit became synonymous with surprise attacks and military prowess, participating in numerous wars and battles throughout a period known as Zieten's ride. He played a pivotal role in the Seven Years War, distinguishing himself and ultimately helping King Frederick the Great escape a deep spiritual crisis while the army was entrenched. Throughout the war, Zieten repeatedly assumed command of the entire Prussian army when the king was absent, cementing his status as a trusted leader. After the war, he became an integral part of the kingdom's elite, a close friend and confidant of the monarch who held a special place in the inner circle of power.
