Zhao Zhiqian, a celebrated Chinese calligrapher, seal carver and painter of the late Qing Dynasty, was the leading scholar-artist of his time. Zhao's seal carving had a profound impact on later masters such as Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi. Zhao Zhiqian, born in 1829 and passed away in 1884, began with an initial name of Yi Fu, a pen name of Leng Jun, also known as Meian from Willan County, Zhejiang Province. He was a Xiang Feng scholar who served as a county magistrate in Dongyang, Fuxin, and Nanchang. Zhao's seal carving and paintings achieved unparalleled success. His paintings continued the tradition of expressive brushwork that began with Chen Shun and Xu Wei during the Ming dynasty, while incorporating elements of calligraphy to create a unique style.
