The Duga-3, also known as The Russian Woodpecker, was a massive Soviet radar system located in Ukraine that operated for 13 years, from July 1976 to December 1989. Its powerful radio signal could be detected simultaneously around the globe by amateur radio operators using frequencies usually above 10Hz. Despite its mysterious existence, few know the true purpose behind building The Duga, which reportedly cost an astonishing 7000 million Russian rubles â roughly double the cost of the infamous Chernobyl nuclear plant. Ukrainian researcher Fedor Alexandrovich is particularly interested in exploring the potential connection between the catastrophic Chernobyl disaster and the secretive Duga radar system, both situated mere kilometers apart (approximately 9km).
