Zeus seated on a throne

This marble statue showcases Zeus sitting regally on his throne with an eagle at his feet. As the Olympian deity of the sky and thunder, king of all gods and men, Zeus is the central figure in Greek mythology. Born to Cronus and Rhea, he is perhaps most notorious for his numerous infidelities, especially towards his sister and wife, Hera. Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Dionysus, Heracles, Helen of Troy, and the Muses are all offspring from his many erotic exploits. His legitimate children include Hephaestus, Hebe, and Ares. The Aetos Dios was a massive, golden eagle that served as Zeus' personal messenger and loyal companion. Some believe it was once a mortal king named Periphas whose virtuous reign earned him divine status. Zeus, enraged by the king's fame, would have struck him down with a thunderbolt but Apollo intervened, transforming Periphas into an eagle and placing him beside Zeus' throne. Others claim Zeus adopted the eagle as a symbol of good fortune after it first appeared to him before the Titan War. This remarkable statue was unearthed in the Gymnasium of Salamis.
