This is a downscaled 3D scan of a plaster cast of the sculpture 'Zeus or Poseidon from the Artemision', dated around 460-450 BCE. The scan originates from the original cast (ref. KAS2100) housed in The Royal Cast Collection at SMK – National Gallery of Denmark. To view more information about the 3D scans of casts in The Royal Cast Collection and download all high-resolution 3D models, visit www.smk.dk/3d. About the sculpture: The bronze original was discovered underwater without anything in its raised right hand. This leaves open whether the figure depicts Poseidon, holding a trident, or Zeus, ruler of the gods, wielding his thunderbolt. The figure showcases the strict classical style that marks the shift from Archaic stiffness and its familiar stereotypical smile to a greater range of expression. As seen in this sculpture, the body is captured at the exact moment before the deity unleashes their anger and strength through their throw. Several works from The Royal Cast Collection were gifted to the CAFA art academy in Beijing in 2008 as replacements for figures smashed during the cultural revolution of the 1960s. These casts have been used in drawing classes at the academy, a tradition that continues in China and Japan long after it faded away in Europe. Henrik Holm, senior research curator at SMK
