Zeus at The Lapidarium, Alba Iulia
myminifactory
This sculpture is a variant of the renowned Statue of Zeus at Olympia. The original statue was an enormous seated figure, approximately 13 meters tall, crafted by Greek sculptor Phidias around 435 BC within the sanctuary of Olympia, Greece, and erected in the Temple of Zeus there. A masterpiece of ivory plates and gold panels over a wooden framework, it represented the god Zeus sitting majestically on an intricate cedar wood throne adorned with ebony, ivory, gold, and precious stones. As one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was lost and destroyed during the 5th century AD without a single copy ever being discovered, leaving behind only ancient Greek descriptions and coin representations to reveal its form.
