Cupid and Psyche is a legendary tale that originated from the renowned Latin novel Metamorphoses, also known as The Golden Ass, penned by Apuleius in the 2nd century AD. This timeless narrative revolves around the triumphant love story of Psyche ("Soul" or "Breath of Life") and Cupid (Latin Cupido, "Desire"), or Amor ("Love", Greek Eros), who ultimately unite in a sacred marriage. Although Apuleius's account is the sole surviving ancient tale, depictions of Eros and Psyche appear in Greek art as far back as the 4th century BC. The story's Neoplatonic undertones and allusions to secret cults offer multiple interpretations, and it has been analyzed as a rich allegory and explored through the lens of folktales, fairy tales, and myth. Since the rediscovery of Apuleius's novel in the Renaissance era, Cupid and Psyche has received extensive attention within the classical tradition. This captivating tale has been retold in poetry, drama, and opera, and its enchanting scenes have been brought to life in painting, sculpture, and even decorative wallpaper. This stunning sculpture by Henri-Joseph Rutxhiel (1775-1837) is a masterful work carved from marble and presented at the salon in 1814. The scene beautifully captures Psyche's majestic descent down a mountain to join her beloved husband in their idyllic life together.
