Zenobia in Chains

Zenobia in Chains

myminifactory

The majesty of this figure's profile, the intricacy of her antique attire, and the meticulous uniformity of the drapery folds demonstrate sculptor Harriet Hosmer's unparalleled command of neoclassical artistry. Zenobia seized control when her husband, ruler of Palmyra (now Syria), met his demise in 267. As queen, she conquered Egypt and ruled until 274 when Roman forces overpowered her legions and took her captive. Hosmer depicts Zenobia as she is led through Rome in golden shackles, part of Emperor Aurelian's victorious procession.
