The name Zabivaka comes from combining two Russian words: забияка ("hothead") and забивать ("to score"). People in Russia chose the mascot by voting online, and its creator was Ekaterina Bocharova, a student designer. The mascot was introduced on October 21, 2016. It's an anthropomorphic Eurasian wolf with brown and white fur wearing a T-shirt with "RUSSIA 2018" written on it and orange goggles to protect his eyes while racing fast on the field. The combination of white, blue, and red colors in Zabivaka's T-shirt and shorts represents the Russian team's national colors. On October 22, 2016, Channel One Russia announced the competition results on the Evening Urgant show. The Wolf named Zabivaka got 53% of the votes, beating the Tiger with 27% and the Cat with 20%. More than one million people voted during September 2016 at FIFA.com or live on the Evening Urgant. Vitali Mutko suggested the name Zabivaka on the show. He is the chairman of the World Cup 2018 Organizing Committee. FIFA paid Bocharova a small amount of $500 for her work.
