Feeding filament directly from the drawer underneath can cause issues with filament feed, potentially affecting print completion and quality. This is a simple alternative filament feed system that can be printed on almost any 3D printer without requiring significant modifications beyond adding a side-mounted spool holder. The design accommodates the recommended 900gm MakerBot PLA spools. The lengthy feed path through Teflon tube from the base of the Z18, combined with an uphill feed path, can cause excessive resistance, resulting in inadequate filament availability on demand from the machine. Furthermore, some spools may have filament stuck to underlying or adjacent filament, requiring extra tension to pull it away. These issues can lead to underextrusion, compromising print reliability and quality. This spool holder is designed to mitigate these factors, ensuring better print outcomes. To implement this change, only one print is required, consisting of two pieces: a spool holder and a threaded bolt to secure it to the side of your Z18 with the lid removed. Please read the instructions carefully and refer closely to the images for accurate fitment guidance. STL Files/Versions: The standard .stl file is designed for use with standard MakerBot spools, while 'Wide' and 'X-Wide' versions have been added to accommodate alternative spools up to 60mm and 80mm wide, respectively. These versions still utilize a screw-on fitting, with the 80mm version expected to accept 1Kg MakerBot spools. Add-on Accessory: A 'Filament Guide' has also been added as an accessory. This small attachment is useful when running a new, very full MakerBot spool, preventing filament from unwinding high enough to get over the side of the spool and drop down the side of the spool holder.
