Z Extensions for Wanhao Duplicator i3, Cocoon Create, and Maker Select
thingiverse
This mod complements the Z Braces and gives the printer an additional 37mm of clearance on the X Crossbeam. The manufacturer rated the Z axis to be 180mm, but poor clearance to cables and the extruder meant that only around 143mm was usable. Pushing past this height was not without risk: failed prints (skipped steps), mechanical damage, electrical short circuits, and the chance of fire were all possible outcomes. Optional parts for hanging scrapers that come with these printers are available; they can be printed for left or right sides, both sides, or none. Print one each of a left and right part (1xL & 1xR), two parts only. Things to buy: 8x M3 x 10mm screws 4x M3 Nyloc nuts Z Braces may be found at: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:921948 If you like these mods and want to fuel even more of them, send beer coupons to https://www.paypal.me/azza68. For a filament feeder that works well with the Di3, try this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1672349 (Filament feeder for Wanhao Duplicator i3, Cocoon Create, and Maker Select). PLEASE NOTE This mod does not work with very early batches of WanHao branded printers. It may also not work on "Powerspec I3 Plus" models; see the Comments section for tips on designing your own or modding this mod. If the spool holder cannot be mounted on top of the beam, using factory-drilled holes, then this mod is not for you. TTBOMK The beam change was made in factory on 15 June 2015, so only very early Di3 models are affected. If you have a very early/beta model, you can still use the parts as tool holders by using top two screw holes only. However, you won't get any height advantage. Print Settings: Printer: WanHao Di3 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.2mm Infill: 50% Notes: Three shells or around 1.2mm thick walls. PLA or your favorite hard plastic. Post-Printing Instructions: 1. Turn on the printer. Zero the Z axis. Move the printer to Z=10mm Turn off the printer and disconnect the power. 2. Remove the spool holder, if fitted. Undo the four screws of each top bracket (of the Z braces). Undo the two screws on each side of the top frame, X crossbeam. Carefully remove the X crossbeam. Take care that smooth rod retainers and their brackets do not fall off. 3. Replace the lower two screws, on each side, as soon as possible; to keep things aligned and stop them from flopping around. 4. Affix the new Z Extensions to each side of the towers, using 10mm long M3 screws and Nyloc nuts (on the lower 2 holes). Do not tighten the screws at this time. 5. With all screws fitted but loose enough to allow movement by slight force, turn on the printer. Zero the Z axis. Move the printer to Z=160mm Turn off the printer and disconnect the power. 6. Whilst applying a downwards force to the smooth rod retainers, tighten the screws on the Z braces. Tighten the screws on the Z extensions; metal parts should sit flush against new plastic parts. Refit the spool holder. 7. Turn on the printer. Check for full and free moment of the Z axis. 8. Resume printing like never before; with the full 180mm of Z available for use.
